All you need to know about business, economy and finance before you start your day
Good morning! Somewhere in home land, a Labubu doll just got promoted from cute monster to Chinese god, at least according to one very sincere aunty. There was some pooja, a formal introduction to Hindu gods, and a customary ‘touch-feet’ for blessings. This may just be the pop culture - religion crossover we have been waiting for. Next up Pokémon cards.
Now, let’s get into the Dispatch! 🚀

From Red Fort to the Nation (and beyond)

PM Narendra Modi’s 12th straight Independence Day address from the Red Fort was a statement of economic momentum and ambition. He unveiled ten major initiatives focused on self-reliance, innovation, and employment, targeting India’s future through technology, defence, and economic reforms.
Here are the highlights:
Mission Sudarshan Chakra & Defence Self-Reliance: Modi launched the “Mission Sudarshan Chakra”, a national security initiative and urged India’s scientific and engineering community to develop indigenous fighter jet engines, reinforcing the push toward defence autonomy.
Made-in-India Tech: Semiconductors & Beyond: He announced that India’s first indigenous semiconductor chip will be ready by the end of 2025, a milestone for tech independence.
₹1 Lakh Crore Youth Employment Drive: A whopping ₹99,446 crore has been earmarked for the PM Viksit Bharat Rozgar Yojana. This ambitious scheme aims to boost youth employment, targeting first-time private-sector jobs with incentives like ₹15,000 grants.
Broader Growth Measures & Fiscal Overhaul: Modi also unveiled sweeping reforms including GST changes tied to Diwali, a maritime initiative dubbed “Samudra Manthan,” and plans for nuclear and space expansion. Modi also announced a task force for next-generation reforms. This force will work within a set timeframe to align existing laws with the needs of the 21st century and prepare the nation to become 'Viksit Bharat' by 2047
Building India: This set of announcements builds a cohesive vision for a self-reliant, tech-enabled, and economically inclusive “Viksit Bharat.” It tackles both macro-strategy, like defence autonomy and semiconductor independence, and grassroots realities like job creation. With clear timelines and substantial funding, Modi's roadmap points toward stronger sovereignty in innovation and opportunity. Now, all we need is execution.

NRIs trading the American dream for Gulf gold

Increasingly NRIs in the US are turning their sights to Dubai and in some cases, Singapore, as a backup plan as the American Dream starts to crack. The growing unease over visas and Green Card delays, especially in the Trump 2.0 era, has led many to seek stability without moving all the way back to India. For some, Dubai’s appeal lies in its mix of professional opportunity and emotional closeness to home. Others, facing imminent visa renewals, are proactively requesting transfers to Gulf offices, citing both career prospects and family convenience.
Geographic & Emotional Proximity: A flight from Dubai to most major Indian cities takes just 3–4 hours, making family visits and attending important occasions far more feasible than from the US. Elderly parents can travel with ease, and NRIs can maintain strong ties to their cultural roots, festivals, and traditions. This proximity blends professional ambition with the reassurance of emotional closeness.
Career Opportunities & Lifestyle: Dubai’s job market is booming across sectors like tech, finance, and logistics, with tax-free salaries and world-class infrastructure. A cosmopolitan lifestyle, luxury amenities, and top-tier healthcare are standard—offered without the immigration red tape and lengthy processing times that often frustrate professionals in America.
Visa Stability: Compared to the precarious nature of L1 or H-1B renewals and the decades-long Green Card backlog, Dubai offers straightforward, renewable visa options. Residency can be secured through employment, property investment, or entrepreneurship, giving families a far greater sense of security.
Strategic Alternatives: For NRIs who aren’t ready to move back to India but want to leave the US, Dubai serves as a middle ground. It combines cultural familiarity with a global, forward-looking environment, making it less of a compromise and more of a strategic decision.
In short, for many Indian professionals, Dubai is emerging as the practical “Plan B”—balancing proximity, opportunity, and long-term security in a way the US no longer can. Incidentally, the United Arab Emirates has climbed to second place in the global ranking of most attractive destinations for digital nomads in 2025, rising from fourth in 2023 and overtaking countries such as Montenegro, the Bahamas, and Hungary — with only Spain ahead.

India's chip reboot: After a 60-year delay, India's chip-making dream is back on track. PM Modi announced 'Made in India' semiconductors will be available by the end of 2025, backed by a plan for 10 new manufacturing plants nationwide.
GST makeover: The Finance Ministry is proposing a major GST overhaul, moving to a two-slab system of 5% and 18%. This plan would scrap the current 12% and 28% slabs, aiming to lower taxes on everyday items.
Agrawal's AI comeback: Fired by Elon Musk, ex-Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal is back with a $30 million AI startup, Parallel Web Systems. The company aims to help AI systems perform faster, more accurate web research, a move that pits him indirectly against his former boss.
India’s maritime makeover: India is nearly tripling its Maritime Development Fund to a massive ₹70,000 crore to upgrade shipyards and port infrastructure. The major funding push is part of a plan to make India a top global shipbuilding hub by 2047.
Saffola's New Star: Marico, the owner of Saffola, predicts its food business could outgrow its edible oil segment in 3-4 years. Driven by products like oats and honey, the food division has already crossed the ₹900 crore mark.
Mahindra's Future Fleet: Mahindra just revealed four new EV concepts - the Vision S, T, SXT, and X. Built on a new platform, these futuristic SUVs and a pickup truck are set to hit production starting in 2027, boasting Level 2 ADAS and multiple powertrain options.

Alaska showdown

What’s up? US President Donald Trump is meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin as we write for you, with the spotlight firmly on the possibility of securing a Ukraine ceasefire. The talks come amid intense geopolitical friction and global market jitters, as both leaders arrive with sharply different agendas. Trump has made it clear that no business engagement with Russia will move forward until the war ends. He has linked any potential economic cooperation to measurable progress on de-escalation, positioning the “Trump economy” as a point of leverage. While signalling optimism that the talks could deliver results, he has also warned Moscow of severe economic consequences if Putin fails to shift towards peace.
The gap: The negotiations are complicated by deep-rooted disagreements. Putin is expected to push for recognition of Russia’s territorial gains and relief from Western sanctions, while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy (who has refused to concede any territory, has not been invited to the Alaska summit). Trump, meanwhile, has promised to “end the Ukraine war quickly” and is already planning a follow-up meeting with Zelenskyy and European leaders, which he views as potentially more consequential than this initial round.
All the world’s a stage: Beyond the political theatre, the bets for the global economy are significant. A breakthrough could cool energy markets, lower prices for major importers such as India, and ease trade pressures. But failure could prolong volatility in commodities and keep US-led economic pressure firmly in place. Markets and investors will be watching closely—not just for signs of a shift in US-Russia relations, but also for what the summit reveals about the broader trajectory of the US economy in an already turbulent geopolitical climate and with Trump’s ultimatum to Putin. All eyes are on this meeting.

Pakistan’s monsoon rains: have caused widespread devastation, claiming at least 117 lives in the last 24 hours alone. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province is the worst hit, with flash floods sweeping away homes and leaving many stranded
AI Shakes Up Europe’s Tech Darlings: European software heavyweights like SAP and Dassault Systemes saw sharp sell-offs as new, more powerful AI models stoked fears of disruption across the sector.
