Desi Capital Grows in VC Landscape

Private market investing rebounded in 2024 to approximately $43 billion, representing a significant portion of Asia-Pacific flows and making India second only to China in the region. Despite global funds continuing to lead—87% of the world’s top 30 funds now invest in India—domestic capital from family offices and corporate treasuries is expanding. The country recorded a historic 1,270 venture capital (VC) deals, even as average deal sizes declined by 20%

Key Highlights:

  • Stability & Alignment: Local, rupee-denominated capital is patient and offers greater stability for founders, especially as 59% of 2024 exits occurred via local IPOs.

  • Local Savvy is Key: Success in India requires teams with practical experience due to the country’s diverse landscape and complex financial and regulatory rules, leading to more buyouts by knowledgeable local groups.

  • Smart Fund Sizing: Smaller early-stage funds (INR 200-400 Cr/$25-50 million) have proven more effective in leading investment rounds and ensuring capital returns, without relying on rare, outsized gains.

Market Context
India’s domestic VC landscape differs from China’s, where local limited partners (LPs) drove a decade-long investment boom. In India, homegrown capital remains a relatively small share of the market. This disparity represents both a risk and an opportunity. Recent reforms, including GST and Digital India, have created pathways for Indian savers and institutions to participate in private-market wealth creation.

Investment Strategies
Investing in India’s private markets requires not just capital, but also local expertise and adaptability to the country’s diverse landscape and regulatory environment. Successful funds are increasingly blending high-growth bets with steady, long-term investments, while right-sized early-stage funds are proving more effective than oversized ones.

Domestic capital is now driving change and shaping the industry’s investment direction. For Indian families and institutions, allocating a portion of their portfolio to domestic VC offers diversification, better partnership opportunities, and the chance to support businesses that drive job creation and innovation.
