All you need to start your day informed in under 6 mins

Good Morning 🇮🇳

Queen of controversy Kangana Ranaut is apparently not enjoying her political career as MP - Mandi, Himachal. For some reason constituents are coming to her with basic issues like broken plumbing and non-existent roads instead of thought provoking discussions on foreign policy, or validating the existence of Hrithik’s sixth finger. “.. I am an MP and these people are coming to me with panchayat-level problems”, she said - while perhaps Googling how to file a municipal complaint. One can only hope the people learn what’s really important.

Air India Fatal Crash Report
Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) releases preliminary report on crash

India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has released a preliminary 15‑page report on the tragic Air India crash that happened on June 12 killing more than 250 people.

Key pointers from the report:

  • Both Engines (Engines 1 and 2) were ‘cutoff’ seconds after take-off via fuel cutoff switches. These switches transitioned from “RUN” to “CUTOFF” for both engines within a second of each other.

  • This instantaneously resulted in cutting off fuel supply to engines, decreasing take-off speeds and causing plane to lose thrust and sink down.

  • Ram Air Turbine (RAT), a backup power device, deployed automatically seconds after cut-off - indicating a total loss of Engine thrust.

  • One pilot can be heard asking the other pilot “why did you cut-off” to which the other pilot replied that he did not - voices are not specified.

  • The ‘cut-off’ switches were then moved to normal ‘RUN” position which automatically started the process of reigniting the engines.

  • While both of the engines were relit, at the time of the crash only one was able to start the process of regaining thrust and reversing core speed loss, the other engine could not.

  • Engines are typically cut-off when a flight lands at the destination or in emergency situations. However, the report does not mention any such emergency incident on board.

  • No significant fault has been found with the plane or engines yet; CCTV footage also shows no evidence of ‘significant’ bird activity in the flight path.

The timeline - 30 seconds of horror:

  • 1:38pm and 42 seconds (IST) - Aircraft achieves maximum recorded speed of 180 Knots IAS. Immediately after this, Engine 1 and Engine 2 fuel cutoff switches transition from “RUN” to “CUTOFF”.

  • 1:38pm and 47 seconds (IST) - Engine speeds drop below minimum idle speed, prompting RAT (backup power device) to begin supplying power.

  • 1:38pm and 52 seconds (IST) - Fuel cut-off switch for Engine 1 moved back to “RUN” state.

  • 1:38pm and 54 seconds (IST) - Fuel cut-off switch for Engine 2 moved back to “RUN” state.

  • 1:39pm and 05 seconds (IST) - “MAYDAY” call by pilots.

  • 1:39pm and 11 seconds (IST) - Final recording from the flight data system.

The report is preliminary and has not drawn any conclusions, as the investigation still running. This is a rapidly evolving story, above report is as of July 12, 2.30am IST.

Tourism 🗺️
India becomes eight-largest tourism economy

According to the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC), India now ranks 8th among the world’s top travel economies for 2024–25, jumping two spots from its previous ranking and landing ahead of powerhouses Italy and Spain. With a staggering contribution of $231.6 billion, tourism continues to be one of the unsung pillars of India's economic growth story. Despite obstacles such as law and order and local tourism fatigue, a strong post-pandemic recovery highlights a positive trajectory for this sector.

Interestingly, USA is the crown champion with tourism contributing $2.36 trillion to the economy, almost double that of second-placed China. The World Economic Forum estimates the global tourism industry will reach $16 trillion by 2034, and India is poised to grab a bigger slice of that pie. WTTC predicts India could leapfrog to 4th place within the next decade.

Today, tourism contributes ~9% of India's GDP, but its impact extends much beyond that. It builds cultural diplomacy, creates jobs at scale, and revives local arts and crafts.

Incredible India! Culture, charm and a crackle of chaos: From the heritage of forts and temples, to the unscripted adventures in Himalayan villages; Goa’s laid-back beaches to Rajasthan’s palatial grandeur; Kerala’s backwaters to Ladakh’s breathtaking landscapes - India is not just a destination, it’s a billion scenic memories rolled into one. If India can balance scale with sustainability, and spirit with mindfulness, it has everything to become the beating heart of global tourism.
